During the Summer of 2017 a group of students and teachers went on a nine-day trip to Peru. While the students did their fair share of sightseeing and exploring, for two of the nine days the group worked on building a garden for a community in Lima. Mrs. Hunter, a teacher at Daphne High School, organized the trip.

“I’ve always wanted to go to Machu Picchu and it’s a trip not many people get to go on. Also, because it had a service component, that really finalized the decision.” Hunter said.

The students were exposed to different cultures and greatly enjoyed working with the communities.

“My favorite part of the trip was probably going out and helping people in a low income area. It made me more thankful for what I have here,” Tucker Pierce, a student, said. The group had visited a community in need and built a garden for their use. The group also donated school supplies to a local school in need.

Samantha Klipsch, another student who went on the trip said her favorite experience was “haggling and the weather.” She enjoyed going to vendors and shopkeepers and haggling for lowers prices on objects.
