Once a year, both the Daphne High School Concert and Symphonic Bands take a trip to Baker High School for the annual Music Performance Assessment. Bands from all over south alabama come to perform their musical selections to a group of judges, who will score them on sound quality and concert etiquette. As well as performing pre-selected pieces, the groups are required to play a piece by sight reading. Sight reading is the process of receiving a musical selection that hasn’t been practiced and the bands must play it to the best of their ability, reading the music as they go. Autumn Strasser, a sophmore in the flute section, commented on the band’s accomplishment on their sight reading score, “Sight reading has always been a challenge, but we managed to focus and play our music correctly.” This year, both bands received overall superior ratings in both standard performance and sight reading. Clark Hurst, a senior in the percussion section, commented on the bands progress, “For all the work we put in, I’m very happy with the results of the MPA ratings.”.
