According to Walden University, thirty percent of students have a job while in high school. For these teenagers, having a job allows for extra spending money. But with school, a social life, and extracurricular activities, a job can become rather demanding on young students.
Some students end up working into the late hours of the night. Alabama child labor laws state that 16-18 year olds may NOT work after 10pm or before 5am on a night preceding a school day. However, on weekends it can be common for some places of business to keep teenage workers much later. Chloe Sivak, a junior at Daphne, said, “Working late definitely tires me out, and it is overwhelming, but I enjoy getting money.”
While after school jobs can possibly have negative impacts on students, contrastingly they can be a way for students to explore potential careers. Daphne junior Olivia Powe said, “I think that having a job impacts me greatly because it gives me something to look forward to after school and motivates me to look for possible new careers.”
According to The Seattle Medium, jobs for youth is an important step towards financial literacy. Having money leads children to learn how to save for the future. Daphne sophomore Ashley Johnson, said, “Yes I do wish I had a job because I feel like it would help me become more mature and responsible with my spending. Also, I could get things that I really like and my parents wouldn’t be able to take them away.”
