Last week, workers constructed a fence around our school. The tall fences enclose the area between every building and include gates that allow students to access the walkways. Students shared a variety of reactions to the barriers being set up.
The gates were added for student safety; however, the reactions of some students were not very positive. Amya Guy, a junior at Daphne High School, hates the fences. “We are in prison; this is a jailhouse, not a school,” she said. When questioned if she believed that the fences were a necessary security measure, Guy emphatically disagreed. She also believes that the fences could cause problems. “What if there’s a fire drill, and we need to get out?”
Jacob Burkett, a freshman at Daphne High School, shares Guys’s negative opinion. “There is no need for it,” Burkett said. “Without it there would be more room to walk. The gate is not even locked; also, it’s plastic.”
Layla Galvan, a freshman at Daphne High School, is more accepting of the new fence. “I don’t mind them,” said Layla, who believes the fences are necessary and will not cause problems. “It prevents people from breaking into the school.”
While student’s opinions differ on whether or not we should have these new fences, teachers and administration believe it’s a necessary and helpful addition to Daphne High School. The goal of our school is to always have the safest and healthiest environment possible and protect the Daphne family.
